The Harnessing Machine Learning activity in Bangladesh recently achieved a government website link to further scale the activity's work. The activity is providing a tool to estimate the total aquaculture farm area using images from remote sensing in conjunction with a survey to collect data on a range of variables related to fish farming.
The research team presented their work to the Department of Fisheries (DoF) during a workshop on August 4, 2022. DoF plays an important role in Bangladesh by planning, developing, and monitoring the progress of the fisheries and aquaculture sector and preparing a statistical database every year, so the DoF officials showed enthusiasm for the Harnessing Machine Learning activity's work in the aquaculture sector.
Presently, Dof's website provides a link to the Harnessing Machine Learning activity's data portal.
"The Director General of DoF, Kh. Mahbubul Haque, played a key role in tagging [the portal] with the government website," said Mohammad Mahfujul Haque, the Fish Innovation Lab activity's Bangladesh principal investigator. "It is rare to accept research outcomes within a short time by a government authority from the university level. I am very happy with this, and I hope that in the future we will be able to cooperate with DoF by providing information to all the districts of Bangladesh."
