Turning the Mirror Inward: Gender Integration Among Fish Innovation Lab Research Teams

As part of its cross-cutting theme on mainstreaming gender equity and youth inclusion, the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Fish administered the Gender-Responsive Aquaculture/Fisheries Development Assessment (GRADA-FIL) to subawardees to gauge their need for resources, trainings, tools, and communications to assist them in advancing gender-responsive aquaculture and fisheries development. A new brief summarizes GRADA-FIL results related to gender integration within Fish Innovation Lab projects, including efforts to equitably recruit and promote women and men on project teams, gender-responsive activities at the team level, and gender-responsive training participation and needs.

While most respondents reported that their teams aim to recruit both men and women staff members and promote women into leadership positions, fewer respondents—though still more than half—reported that their teams addressed more specific gender constraints, such as considering additional needs and responsibilities of women team members or how cultural norms and rules can influence behavior within teams. Although less than half of respondents had received training on any of the gender-specific topics at the onset of their Fish Innovation Lab-funded projects, a majority of respondents reported that their teams could benefit from such training.

The results highlight opportunities for training and outreach at the team level, including the need for an accessible and comprehensive set of training resources about both gender-responsive aquaculture/fisheries development and closing the gender gap within research teams. As the Fish Innovation Lab’s work progresses, these findings suggest key entry points and opportunities for the Management Entity to work directly with researchers to help achieve project-specific gender-responsive goals.
