Aquaculture Will Continue to Depend More on Land Than Sea

A new paper published in Nature highlights freshwater aquaculture's current and future importance for global food security and sustainable diets. The authors—including Ben Belton, lead PI of the Fish Innovation Lab Machine Learning for Better Aquaculture activity—contend that previous projections have inflated the growth potential of marine aquaculture and undervalued the present and future roles of freshwater aquaculture, a key source of global edible aquaculture production. They call for balanced approaches to science, policy, and investment that prioritize freshwater aquaculture development in addition to mariculture to address global food security.
