Kristen Dechert

A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Kristen Dechert is the marketing and communications manager for the Fish Innovation Lab. She manages the dissemination of public information via the lab’s website, newsletter, social media, and print media.

Before joining the lab in 2019, Dechert was director of women in leadership at Ours to Change and developed a program to recruit women to run for elective office in Mississippi. With more than 10 years at Mississippi State University, she previously directed communication, research, and evaluation at the Research and Curriculum Unit, where she oversaw the communications and research portfolios and co-coordinated the Mississippi Education Policy Fellowship Program. Prior to joining the RCU in 2011, she was the technical writer for the Energy Institute and an instructor in several departments at the university.

Dechert has taught courses in technical writing, literature, and English language development and has served on textbook editorial review boards and as an expert reviewer for linguistic research. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from the University of Montevallo and Mississippi State University, respectively, and is working toward her doctoral degree in public policy and administration at Mississippi State.

Dechert is the president of the University of Montevallo Junior Alumni Board of Directors and a member of the Public Relations Association of Mississippi and the Southern Public Relations Federation.
